🗣️: From your practice what were the common mistakes that brands make in growth marketing?
💬 Jason: My work is primarily focused on tech, ops and data but we're witnessing a fundamental shift in eComm marketing full stop right now.
We're moving from a world of walled gardens having a monopoly on customer data and then rent-seeking from brands off the back of it...leading to lazy marketing. To a world where the tech titans are battling it out under the guise of 'privacy' and further entrenching their monopolies - with Meta being the ultimate loser and CAC skyrocketing.
The aforementioned marketing laziness manifested in most brands has absolutely no clear z/1p customer data strategy. No idea how to collect it, organize it, structure it, segment or operationalize it - plus the tooling to facilitate all this. Growth marketing HAS been about cheap, easy, constant acquisition.
Now it's going to be about containing CAC and retention. Both of those require a strong z/1p data strategy. Marketers are getting a rude but very necessary wake-up call IMO.
This is why you're hearing about CDPs like they're the second coming right now 😂
🗣️: 2022 already ended and maybe you have some tips for New 2023 Year?
💬 Jason: My advice is that if you're looking to upgrade any part of your tech stack in 2023, start scoping asap. It almost always takes much longer than you think and with dependencies and partner alignments often required can push you right up until next Christmas in a blink.
I watch this happen every single year because brands always leave things to the last minute and then partners scramble to make it happen under unrealistic deadlines because the merchant didn't prepare soon enough...
🗣️: What should eCommerce businesses focus on in the early stages?
💬 Jason: Building a sustainable business model.
🗣️: Why is SEO important to businesses?
💬 Jason: SEO will only help you capture demand (desire) - not create it. And you have to be able to do both.
🗣️: How do I make my brand stand out in Google searches?
💬 Jason: I'd worry more about standing out in people's minds and hearts than in Google.
🗣️: What are the key strategies in growing my brand organically?
💬 Jason: Make a positive impact and the rest is much much easier.
🗣️: When it comes to growing your brand organically, can you like give us your 3 or 5 rules(or more!) into achieving this goal?
💬 Jason:
Give more than you take
Find out where your 'tribe' congregates - and be there
Be a magnet - not a lasso
Experiment - a lot
Talk with your customers, not at them.
🗣️: From your experience, what's an acceptable growth rate for a startup eCom business?
💬 Jason: I'd focus more on profitability than growth. Anyone can spend $10 to make $1 and growth is then virtually unlimited. Create a sustainable business model that doesn't rely on cheap or easy customer acquisition because those days are over.
